Wipro vs HCLTech (2026): AI, Deals, Margins, Valuation & Which Is Better?
Wipro and HCLTech both describe themselves as AI-led transformation partners, but HCLTech has started attaching hard revenue numbers to the claim.
HCLTech reported $171 million of Advanced AI revenue in Q1 FY2027, up more than 60% year on year in constant currency.
It also announced up to ₹3,500 crore of planned AI data-centre investment.
Wipro is embedding AI across many large outsourcing and transformation engagements, but its Q1 disclosure remains oriented around deal examples rather than a separately quantified AI revenue line.
This disclosure asymmetry is one of the most important differences between the two stocks today.
The direct answer: HCLTech currently offers stronger execution; Wipro offers a much lower valuation
HCLTech grew Q1 revenue 2.6% year on year in constant currency.
Wipro IT Services grew 0.9%.
HCLTech net income increased 20.3%.
Wipro net income increased 0.6%.
HCLTech reported EBIT margin of 16.9%, or 17.5% excluding restructuring costs.
Wipro's IT Services operating margin was 16.0%.
The price for HCLTech's stronger execution is a materially higher valuation: roughly 18.2x P/E versus Wipro at 13.1x.

HCLTech is not growing rapidly, but it is growing more consistently
Q1 constant-currency revenue increased approximately 2.6% year on year.
Services growth was stronger in IT and Business Services at 4.2% year on year in constant currency.
Public Services increased 12%.
Retail and CPG increased 10.1%.
Technology and Services increased 7.3%.
The portfolio therefore contains several pockets growing materially faster than the company average.
Wipro remains around the zero-growth line
IT Services revenue increased only 0.9% year on year in constant currency and declined 1.2% sequentially.
That is better than the deeper contraction Wipro experienced in earlier parts of the cycle, but it does not yet demonstrate a full recovery.
Q2 guidance of -1.5% to +0.5% sequentially reinforces that caution.
The most important Wipro catalyst is therefore revenue conversion from previously won large deals.
The profit-growth gap is much wider than the revenue-growth gap
HCLTech net income increased 20.3% year on year to ₹4,624 crore.
Wipro net income increased only 0.6% to approximately ₹3,360 crore.
HCLTech therefore produced powerful earnings growth from relatively modest top-line growth.
Part of that improvement came from operating efficiency.
Part came from the comparison base and restructuring effects.
But the result still demonstrates much better current profit momentum than Wipro.
HCLTech's margin is stronger even after absorbing restructuring costs
Reported EBIT margin was 16.9%.
Excluding restructuring costs, margin was approximately 17.5%.
Wipro's IT Services operating margin was 16.0%.
HCL therefore has between 90 and 150 basis points of current margin advantage depending on which HCL figure is used.
That advantage is smaller than Infosys's margin lead over Wipro, but still financially meaningful.
HCLTech also maintained full-year margin guidance above Wipro's current result
HCLTech expects FY2027 EBIT margin between 17.5% and 18.5%.
That suggests management believes the restructuring-adjusted Q1 margin is close to the lower end of a sustainable full-year range.
Wipro does not provide the same annual operating-margin guidance framework and has acknowledged near-term volatility from strategic investment.
The most important HCLTech number may be only $171 million
Advanced AI revenue reached $171 million in Q1.
That is small relative to HCLTech's $3.65 billion quarterly revenue.
But it grew 62.1% year on year and 10.6% sequentially in constant currency.
The strategic value comes from the growth rate and the company's willingness to define a revenue pool around AI rather than treating every traditional project containing an AI tool as AI revenue.
HCLTech is building AI around engineering and infrastructure, not just consulting
Its disclosed AI wins include an AI Factory engagement exceeding $180 million of incremental scope.
Other deals include AI-enabled semiconductor engineering, autonomous robotics, site-reliability engineering and semiconductor-manufacturing transformation.
This fits HCLTech's existing strength in engineering R&D, infrastructure and product engineering.
The company is therefore trying to monetise AI where software meets physical systems and enterprise infrastructure.
The ₹3,500 crore AI data-centre plan makes HCL's strategy more capital intensive
HCLTech plans to invest up to approximately ₹3,500 crore to establish AI data centres with potential capacity of 50 MW.
This is strategically unusual for an Indian IT-services company.
Traditional services models are highly asset-light.
AI infrastructure can require GPUs, power, cooling, data-centre capacity and specialised operations.
If the investment creates differentiated managed AI infrastructure revenue, returns can be attractive.
If utilisation disappoints, capital intensity can reduce the very ROCE advantage that currently makes HCLTech attractive.
Wipro is choosing a more partner-and-platform-oriented AI path
Wipro's Q1 client wins repeatedly reference Wipro Intelligence, WEGA, WINGS, AIOps, GenAI and agentic AI.
The company is using AI to automate infrastructure operations, software development, application maintenance, testing, workplace support and business processes.
This model requires less visible data-centre capex.
The disadvantage is that investors cannot yet see a comparable standalone AI-revenue number.
Wipro's AI deal examples are nevertheless commercially relevant
One Q1 engagement involved vendor consolidation for a global chemicals company using AI-enabled infrastructure and application management.
Another used an AI-powered global delivery model for geospatial-data operations.
Healthcare and insurance contracts included AI roadmaps, intelligent automation and agentic workflows.
Wipro also embedded AI into software-development lifecycle work for a large global technology enterprise.
These are not laboratory experiments.
They are contractually monetised enterprise-service engagements.
The disclosure difference creates a useful investor test
Wipro should eventually be able to show whether AI is creating incremental revenue rather than simply changing delivery methods.
If AI only helps Wipro deliver existing contracts with fewer people, the technology may improve margin but not necessarily revenue.
If AI wins new transformation work, expands client scope or creates platform revenue, it can accelerate both.
HCLTech's $171 million disclosure provides an early benchmark against which future growth can be measured.
HCLTech has another structural advantage Wipro does not replicate: software revenue
HCLSoftware annual recurring revenue was approximately $1.06 billion in Q1 FY2027.
Software products can create licence, subscription and support revenue that behaves differently from people-intensive services revenue.
Recurring software revenue can also increase gross margin and deepen customer lock-in.
The portfolio includes established enterprise products acquired and developed over many years.
But software can also become a drag if products age
Recurring revenue is valuable only if customers continue renewing and products remain strategically relevant.
Legacy software can require continuous R&D and sales support even when growth is low.
HCLSoftware ARR grew only around 2% year on year in constant currency.
That makes the software division more of a stable cash-generating differentiator than HCLTech's fastest current growth engine.
Wipro's equivalent diversification comes from consulting and business-process capabilities
Capco gives Wipro a specialised consulting position in banking, capital markets and insurance.
Wipro has also expanded through acquired enterprise and digital-services businesses.
The objective is to move upstream from commodity outsourcing toward consulting-led transformation, then pull through technology implementation and managed services.
This can increase deal size and strategic relevance.
The challenge is converting acquisitions into durable organic growth.
Bookings show momentum at both companies, but the numbers are not directly interchangeable
HCLTech reported $2.407 billion of net-new TCV.
Wipro reported total bookings of $3.37 billion and large-deal bookings of $1.626 billion.
Wipro's total-bookings definition includes new orders, renewals and expansions.
HCLTech explicitly describes its Q1 figure as net-new bookings.
For growth forecasting, net-new work is generally more informative than a booking number containing substantial renewals.
HCLTech's bookings also match its current growth profile better
The company calls $2.4 billion its highest-ever Q1 net-new bookings.
That comes alongside positive year-on-year growth, a quantified AI business and stable full-year guidance.
Wipro's large deals are promising, but the reported revenue line has not yet shown the same conversion.
HCLTech's FY2027 guidance is broader and more constructive
Total revenue guidance remains 1%-4% constant-currency growth.
Services guidance is 1.5%-4.5%.
Wipro's published guidance covers Q2 rather than the full year and still includes sequential contraction at the midpoint.
That does not guarantee HCLTech will outperform every quarter.
It does indicate management currently sees more visibility into positive annual growth.
Cash conversion is essentially a draw
Wipro generated operating cash flow equal to 98% of Q1 net income.
HCLTech reported trailing-twelve-month free-cash-flow-to-net-income conversion of approximately 99%.
Both companies remain strong cash generators.
Neither investment case depends on debt-financed survival or aggressive working-capital accounting.
HCLTech's return on capital is much higher
Bull Run records HCLTech ROCE at approximately 28.37% versus Wipro at 18.71%.
ROE is about 22.98% at HCLTech versus 15.49% at Wipro.
That capital-efficiency gap is important because both companies operate in an industry that should theoretically require limited balance-sheet capital.
The more efficiently the company converts its employee base, intellectual property and client relationships into profit, the more valuable the franchise.
The five-year numbers favour HCLTech too
HCLTech five-year sales growth is approximately 11.54% versus Wipro at 8.38%.
Profit growth is approximately 8.35% versus 4.10%.
Five-year EPS growth is positive 8.40% for HCLTech and negative 7.99% for Wipro in Bull Run's database.
This is why HCLTech is valued as a more consistent compounder while Wipro is valued as a turnaround.
Wipro's lower valuation is much more meaningful against HCLTech than against Infosys
Wipro trades at approximately 13.09x trailing earnings versus HCLTech at 18.19x.
That is a discount of roughly 28%.
Wipro also trades around 1.97x book versus HCLTech at 4.22x.
The market is therefore charging a materially larger premium for HCLTech's execution quality.
Could Wipro close that valuation gap?
Yes, but a rerating needs operational proof.
If Wipro's constant-currency growth becomes consistently positive, margin recovers toward 17%-plus and large deals ramp successfully, the stock would no longer need to trade at such a deep discount.
A rerating from 13x toward peer multiples can create substantial share-price upside even without extraordinary EPS growth.
The reverse is also true.
If growth remains near zero, the low multiple may simply reflect weaker economics.
HCLTech's higher multiple has its own risk
An 18x P/E is not extreme relative to historical premium IT-services valuations, but it still embeds expectations of superior execution.
HCLTech must deliver:
- Positive services growth.
- 17.5%-18.5% EBIT margin.
- AI revenue expansion.
- Strong deal conversion.
- Stable software recurring revenue.
- Disciplined returns on AI data-centre capex.
A failure in several of those areas can compress the valuation premium.
Dividend yield gives Wipro another valuation advantage
Bull Run's current trailing yield is approximately 6.3% for Wipro versus 4.62% for HCLTech.
HCLTech declared a ₹12-per-share Q1 dividend.
Both companies return meaningful cash to shareholders.
Wipro's higher yield partly reflects its lower share price and weaker valuation.
Dividend income can improve total return, but the long-run winner will still be determined mainly by earnings growth.
The stock market has rewarded HCLTech's stronger execution
| Market Metric | Wipro | HCLTech |
|---|---|---|
| Price on 25 Aug 2026 | ₹180.09 | ₹1,315.80 |
| 1-month return | +2.84% | +3.52% |
| 3-month return | -10.66% | +12.92% |
| 6-month return | -10.44% | -4.20% |
| 1-year return | -29.05% | -12.52% |
| 52-week high | ₹273.10 | ₹1,780.10 |
| 52-week low | ₹169.00 | ₹1,030.00 |
| RSI (14) | 43.94 | 43.25 |
HCLTech has outperformed Wipro across three, six and twelve months.
Wipro remains very close to its 52-week low.
HCLTech is also below its 52-week high, but its recent three-month trend has been substantially stronger.
